Delhi Awakens to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with breathing dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals ten times the safe threshold set by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1800, representing 15-20x higher than healthy limits.

Fireworks Prohibition and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

However earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership petitioned the supreme court to seek a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and environment".

Legal Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the designated hours across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly version.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered pollution spiking around late evening to some of the worst levels seen during celebrations in at least three years.

Cross-Border Implications

The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a dispute with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the events.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated readings of pollution in the city have persisted as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near Diwali, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was once regarded as the planet's dirtiest city.

Multiple Pollution Sources

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a mix of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent states of farming communities.

In these regions, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, producing dangerous smog that becomes contained over the capital as colder air descends.

Health and Financial Toll

The economic and health impact on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 early mortalities each year in Delhi.
